Who can be listed on your auto insurance policy?

Auto insurance is something that the whole family benefits from. Unless a family member is such a risk that they add significantly to the price of the family policy, usually everyone in a household is covered on one policy.  At Innovative Insurance Resources, serving Honolulu, HI, we are a full-service independent insurance agency. Our agents have more than 30 years of experience helping our customers find the best auto insurance for their needs.

Many families have more than one vehicle. They may not be owned by the same family member. This is not unusual. It is also not unusual to have people driving vehicles other than the one in their name. When you are setting up your auto insurance policy, the main driver should be listed first. It is important to let your agent know which driver drives what percent of each car. Some vehicles are considered a higher risk.

The vehicle owner should be listed on the insurance policy, followed by their spouse or partner. In most cases, you will list all the people of driving age who are related to you in your household. If you have a child who is away at college and will still be driving a family vehicle, they most likely will be able to remain on the policy. These days it gets a little more complicated.

There may be people who live in your household who are not related to you. It might be that you live with a boyfriend or a girlfriend. You may have an au pair, a nanny, or a caregiver who lives with you and need to drive your car. If they use it regularly, they should be listed.
